Albay lies at the southern portion of Luzon in the Bicol region, bordered on the north by Camarines Sur and on the south, by Sorsogon. On the east is the Pacific Ocean, on the southeast, Burias Pass and on the northeast, Lagonoy Gulf and Camarines Sur.
The provincial terrain is generally mountainous, but around Mayon Volcano and Mount Malinao are scattered areas of fertile plains and valleys. Mayon Volcano, truly a world-class Paradise Philippines tour destination, famous the world over for it’s beautiful, almost perfect cone, dominates the landscape. Rising over 7,500 feet above sea level, it serves as a landmark of the entire Bicol region. With an area of 2,553 sq/km, the province constitutes barely 0.85% of the total land area of the country.
The province is composed of one city and 17 municipalities. Legaspi city serves as the provincial capital.
Language or dialect generally spoken by the inhabitants of Albay province are Bikolano, Tagalog and English. Albay province population as of 2000 Census is 1,090,907. Albay’s main industry is agriculture and handicrafts. The Province of Albay is also well known for it’s natural hot springs in Tiwi, a 1st class municipality of Albay province.
